I've caught the sewing bug...

♥

Leading up to the Christmas break I became interested in sewing...again.

Ive always wanted to make my own clothes but have always found sewing machines, overlockers and patterns extremely intimidating.

I had been noticing that some of the vintage style girls I follow on Instagram were making their own clothes and with the endless supply of beautiful fabrics around, the ability to make unique pieces inspired me to pull my finger out of my proverbial and overcome my fears.

So I draggwd out my trusty Brother Star 15 machine, which although must be about 12 years old now,  is still running like a dream.

I already had a number of beginner patterns in my stash but decided to start with a gathered skirt using a fabulous YouTube tutorial by Gretchen Hirsch.

This tutorial covers every step from start to finish...from measuring your waist, drafting the pattern, cutting out the fabric, inserting a zipper and of course sewing the piece.

I'm proud to announce that I did finish the skirt which I will share in my next post.

Banjo & Kate Sea Garden Skirt

I had never heard of the label Banjo and Cake until I saw the gorgeous Bette Boom wearing one of their skirts in her Seaside Siren post last year.

She was wearing their Sea Garden skirt and I absolutely adored the print of this skirt, the colour combination and the fact it had octopus on it!

I tried to buy this skirt a few times from Too Fast Clothing but sadly missed out on my sizing. Thankfully they restocked this beauty so I knew I had to have it.

The skirt is a silky poly/cotton material and has a lining which is made of soft knit with a tulle border on the bottom. The lining provides extra shape to the skirt without having to wear a full petticoat which is great as I find this skirt, given it isn't 100% cotton, can be a little on the warmer side in summer so would be quite hot with the addition of a full petticoat.

As you can see from the images above the skirt has pockets! Yes pockets!
I have to say I am a huge fan of dresses and skirts with pockets. Not for their practicality of actually putting things other than my hands in but I just love walking around with my hands in my pockets. Call me weird!

Overall a great skirt and I'll be keeping my eye on Banjo & Kate in the future.
